DIY Home Surveillance - What You Need to Succeed

!±8± DIY Home Surveillance - What You Need to Succeed

Today's world is becoming a more dangerous and scary place to live. Burglary, vandalism, and violent crime run rampant in some areas, and often the police presence required to mitigate the threat in residential areas leaves a bit to be desired. But there are options available for homeowners to protect themselves and their families from this threat, and to help police identify and apprehend perpetrators.

There are companies out there who want to charge consumers an arm and a leg to install a state-of-the-art CCTV or digital surveillance system in the home. But fortunately, you don't have to be one of those people who get taken advantage of. By installing your own digital surveillance system, you can save yourself thousands of dollars, and end up just as secure as your neighbor who paid handsomely for the privilege.

Installing a home surveillance system is a good weekend project. While there will be some manual labor involved, if planned out properly, your project will go smoothly and you will be on your way in no time! Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Identify what you need to watch. Maybe you need a camera to watch your driveway, your back yard, your pool, and your front door. Maybe you just need to watch your baby's nursery. The point is, identify how many areas you need to keep an eye on. This will give you the approximate number of surveillance cameras that will be required for your system.

2. Identify where you need to position your cameras. Now that you know how many cameras you will need, you have to identify where you are going to mount them. This can be accomplished using a floorplan or drawing of your property layout, and perhaps a ladder and digital camera to take some photos of where cameras will go, and what you would like them to see/cover. This should also give you an idea as to what materials will be needed to perform the installation, such as mounting hardware, cabling, etc.

3. Identify what kind of cameras you need. Now that you know how many cameras you need and where you intend to put them, you need to put that info to use in identifying the kind of cameras you need. Is the camera being placed indoors or out? If you are placing the camera outside, it needs to be able to withstand the elements, so you need a camera that is weatherproof, or you will need a weatherproof camera housing to protect the camera.

Is the area being covered always well lit, or is there little or no light available at times, and do you even need coverage during those times? If you need coverage in near or complete darkness, you will need a camera that is either low-light sensitive or an infrared/night-vision camera.

4. Identify what type of viewing and recording system you need. Now that you know how many cameras you need, you already know how many channels are required on your recording/viewing device. Further, you need to identify about how long you need to store recorded video. For example, is this your permanent residence, or a vacation home or cabin, where you might not be there but once every few weeks? These will all be important when buying your system.

5. Identify where the viewing/recording unit will go. Once you know where you want to place your DVR or other recording device, you can easily decide how much wiring you will need to install the system, and get an idea where and how the wiring will be run.

6. Decide which installation materials, hardware, and accessories you will need to install. How long are your wire runs going to be? Will you need to run your power separately, or together with the cable? If you run them together, you can save a great deal of headache by using Siamese coaxial cable, which consists of a shielded coaxial cable, bonded to a two-conductor power line.

If you run your own cable, you may need BNC or RCA video connectors and power connectors for the cameras. Also, depending upon how many cameras you need, you may use individual power transformers (similar to a cellular phone charger), or go for a distributed power box instead.

On the mounting side of things, you may need mounting brackets, housings, and other additional hardware (screws, nails, etc).

Once you have accurately identified what you need, it's just a matter of calling our friendly and helpful sales team for help choosing the right product, or making a visit to our online store to place your order, anytime day or night. You'll have your product in just a few days, and be ready to move forward with your project.

At this point you should have a pile of information and hardware at your disposal. Here is a quick checklist of everything you should have:

- Cameras

- A Viewing/Recording System

- Power Transformer(s) for the Cameras

- Cable(s) (Video and Power)

- Connectors (unless you have pre-made cables)

- Camera Mounting Hardware and/or Housings

- Instruction Manuals for all of the above.

- Spare parts (in case you make a mistake)

Additionally, it can be a big help to have a "field monitor" on hand when installing your cameras. A "field monitor" is a handheld video screen that you can connect directly to the camera while on the ladder, and will help you get the camera in just the right position before you come down. This will save you tons of headache and hassle as you install your equipment, and will help ensure a good install on the first try.

Before you install, here are a few other things to know:

1. Know the laws regarding surveillance in your jurisdiction. For example, it is illegal in some jurisdictions to record video AND audio. In others, it is necessary to post that surveillance is taking place. If you don't already know what the laws regarding surveillance are, consult your attorney or your local law enforcement agency for more information.

2. Know the building and fire codes for your jurisdiction. Some states require special types of cabling to be used (such as PLENUM), where others require such installations to be handled by a licensed electrician or installer. Other areas may require you to have some type of building permit to install surveillance on your property. It's best to check with your local building inspector to find out for sure.

3. Know that all your equipment works before permanently installing it. Some folks make the mistake of not testing the equipment right out of the box, only to find that they installed a camera that was damaged in transit on the peak of their roof, and it takes several hours more to take down the bad camera, and again to reinstall it after a replacement is received.

Finally, remember, SAFETY FIRST!! Don't get into an install that you are not physically capable of, or that you lack adequate knowledge or experience to perform. Be especially cautious working around other electrical wiring and utility connections. Having great security is worthless if you're dead.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) What's Their Purpose?

!±8± Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) What's Their Purpose?

You would have grown up seeing your grandparents often replace fuses or in recent times reset circuit breakers when there was a sudden voltage surge or current fluctuation in your homes.

In generation next, these fuses and circuit breakers are fast replaced by what is known as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters or GFCI. These devices are also referred to as "complete shock solutions" as they prevent you from being electrocuted. A GFCI can be a circuit breaker or a receptacle.

With Atlanta, Georgia now being home to almost all the major corporations in the world, there is a huge inflow of young executives in the city who are always short on time. Do you know that when in a hurry to leave for work, you can do (or not do) some silly things that can even cost you your life? For example, you may be eating toast and eggs for breakfast and in a hurry to power off the toaster, you may use a metal spoon or knife to shut down the device; without even realizing that you are actually completing an electric circuit that can cause shock or even electrocution.

In another scenario, you or your baby or you may have spilled water on the floor or there could be a leak in your apartment that you haven't found time to repair. Again, standing on the wet floor with naked feet is another recipe for disaster that could be prevented, by using a ground fault circuit interrupter.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters History

According to National Electric Commission, more than 300 people in US lose their lives every year due to electrocution. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters were introduced in 1970's to prevent electrocution.

As per the latest guidelines of the National Electric Code (NEC), electricians need to install "smart lock" kinds of GFCI receptacles in your home and offices.

Purpose of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters

These devices are designed to detect even the smallest leakage of current, say about 5-30 mille-amperes. They operate within a very short time frame of about 1/40th of a second to interrupt the current flow. They contain a differential current transformer that works by studying the current balance between two conductors.

To protect your family from the hazards of electrocution, GFCI receptacles should be installed by an Atlanta electrician in wet locations, near water. Additional location are bathrooms, home exteriors, unfinished basements or crawl spaces, kitchens, garages, laundry, wet bar sinks as well as in boathouses and near swimming pools. A larger Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter of about 500A capacity is useful in preventing electrocution when placed near utility structures and other buildings.

According to NEC, the installation of a GFCI can assist in reducing the risk of electrocution by 70%.

Install a GFCI in your Atlanta home or business today, as it will help in detecting ground faults, prevent electric fires and also protect your family from electric shocks, burns and electrocution by blocking the flow of current.

The Different Types Of Pool Lighting

!±8± The Different Types Of Pool Lighting

A wonderful source of enjoyment and exercise is swimming. Enjoy the sun by day relaxing, while you and your family around the pool is a popular past time for many. And if you try to get a faster lap time, or certainly a master stroke, for swimming sports offers many health benefits. If you happen to enjoy a swim in the night, there are many different types of lighting pool on the market today that provide brighter illumination. Byto know the difference between them all, you can invest in the right kind of pool of light to meet your needs.

Depending on the specific structure of your land in the pool, there are usually different niches in your swimming pool lighting structure of built space. Onions in a position for an outgoing light beam is needed in a well-lit pool. A proposal for the pool lights are usually hundreds of watts. This is to use a common power, as it provides brilliant illuminationin a pool. A twelve-volt transformer is usually used with in-ground pools.

For above ground pools, various lighting options, such as the structures are different. There are several options for above ground pools, with the first light through the wall of the pool. Not used by the lighting system on the wall for above ground pools is much more, thanks to recent technological advances. Although these lights good job, the installation can be a little 'difficult as the decisionInstalling this type of lighting is not only permanent, but can ruin a swimming pool, if not done correctly. Holes must be cut either in the pool and coating to absorb light. If the holes are not accurately measured, and then sealed properly, can drain the pool and could become unusable.

Ring fiber optic lighting are two types of swimming pool, with the top of above ground swimming pools to install the system. With the removal of part of the top rail, a hanger for hanging lightswill be installed. Known as J-hook, the hook is hidden when the top bar is put in its place. The lights hang from the water surface, while the electric cable and transformer located outside the pool. Fiber optic similar to a J-hook as the cable itself to be placed between the top rail installed above ground swimming pools.

There are two types of lighting suitable for both swimming pools and above ground. These are known as top-lighting andFloat. Bridge lighting (also known as light poles, etc.) are removed from the pool with the source of light must be directed to the water. Insects are attracted to light directed away from swimmers, so that lighting affected benefits for those who have too little option when swimming at night. Pole lights are available in two models, electric or solar energy and give you the opportunity to get a little 'more environmentally friendly and enjoy your free time. If you are looking for enlightenmentincludes the light source bulb, the inside of your pool is not fixed, but at some point to satisfy both needs floaters. The lights floated on the water surface, regardless of whether it is a ground or above ground swimming pool. This battery-or solar energy may be a variety and a literal rainbow of colors.

Turning 16 and Getting a Car

!±8± Turning 16 and Getting a Car

After reading this story, I'm sure that most parents' thoughts on a 16-year-old, to have a car. I'm not proud of some of the things I've done, or close calls I had, but I have a lot to learn from these experiences. I just had a real car for less than a year before I left home at the same car. I do not count, the first car that I bought at the junk units in the theater and ran only twice when I was 15.

Shortly after my 16 Birthday DadI took the dealer and has helped me to buy a used 1950 Plymouth 4 functioning doors. He also let me load the gas, I came across the bill is too high. I remember that I also have to lead the county seat to obtain a license, and I was nervous that I might ask how I got there. A car meant I was now more of a follower of a leader in the car had very few students school. You can use a lot of things to do with a car and also a lot of trouble. I would stay out lateCity driving at night and find everyone wanted to play poker to distribute to some lonely road back and play on the back of the seats under the dome of light for hours at a time.

Some of my friends came to me a trick they like to play some of the older students would be and because I had a gun and a car, I was one of the main actors on the property. We started to spread the voice of a woman whose husband was the late shift and drag the young, while hewas at work. At the end of the alley Leaper in Providence, Kentucky, where we lived, there was an old abandoned house. I just want to drive after dark and the park around the back, load the shotgun and wait behind a tree. The others who were on strike together some of the eager students in his car and take them out. They would give us an excuse for parking in the street in front of the house and have to walk the rest of the road. I almost let it get to the frontPorch and then I would go out and put a couple of shotgun rounds into the trees.

We have just one car and never allow the sacrifice to drive their cars. We would normally take several hours to find all the victims and reassure them. Of course, they were ready to pull the string on the next group. After a couple of weeks ago we had more new blood and called it quits. Fortunately no one was injured, but his pride.

One Saturday, I ran the gas for about 5 U.S. 41Kilometers outside the city. I went home and borrowed the Hudson family and took some gas. Now I had a problem, I need someone to drive my car at home so I can return the family car. I drove up to half of the city, this consisted of a traffic light at the top of the hill in downtown Providence. There were a couple of pool halls and cinemas along the street a half block down the road, just a few shops. You can always find someone to stay aroundCenter of the city in search of something to do or someone to talk to. I was a student, plus a friend of my cousin, as I was, and he was older, so I knew that they have a license. For some reason seemed reluctant to help me, but I insisted, so he jumped in. We headed to the car and I have gas in the tank, he started and told him to follow me back home. Everything went well until we turned on this side street which was about three meters ditchon one side, sloping down towards the water at about 30 degrees. I looked in the rearview mirror and I could not believe my eyes. It was closer to the ditch and then pushed a little more on the bench and slid down the possibilities. He started at the bottom, if I could see the car screamed.

I learned then that is not a license, and not only that I later discovered that he had a mental problem that causedhim to the car in the opposite direction, that he wanted to go, if you so excited. He also had a pickup truck rolled on a curve, once his problem. I'm sure there is a name, but I do not know what it is. I have never forgotten and are very attentive to the side of the road. I think for the reason that so many workers and the police she met while working on the side of the road.

The police went to investigate what was happening, and I did not want to getmy friend into trouble. I know I talked my way out, but I do not remember how I explained that I drove two cars at the same time. One thing that helps me, and that the father was known throughout the city and almost everyone sooner or later he had worked for him in the well or played football with him at school was the school's football star and hero. I think it's good to grow up in a small town. Everyone knows who you are and a lot oflooked.

Late one night, someone suggested to reduce the Fort Campbell, Kentucky and see what we found. We drove to a side door, which was closed. We parked on the side of the road and put the jack under the car so that we would like an apartment. Then we started across a field towards the military post. There was a big warning sign for fines and jail for trespassing, but that does not even slow for us. We found a parking lot full of tanks andincreased in one and played with the controls for a while '. My friend had a knife blade in his pocket, because I'll never know. As he was rising from the tank, put his hand in his pocket and cut badly. We had blood all over, stopped the bleeding was fine and we left the tank to check out the barracks. We tried different ports, and they were all locked. Suddenly we heard the sirens of the whole base and MP by Boliden, as we hid. We decided it was time to quitthere, so we returned to the car. The next day we hear that a plane crashed at Fort Campbell. Somebody must have watched over us that night or we could be in a lot of trouble.

A mile out of town just before the intersection of U.S. 41 was another friend lived, how many problems as I did. We had built a fortress on the field behind his house. It 'was a dirt road that leads to the field, and as he left the main road was a dirt bank on both sides near theLane. I had been running in the mud and everyone was jumping and sliding. Now, open the rear doors of Plymouth to the front of the car and one of the boys left the door open while she pushed. I have some pull and opened the door to get the bank and tearing. Now I walk around with a back door missing. And two rangefinder odd colors that I used to be replaced from the junk yard. My car was starting to look pretty sad.

The track was built onon the second floor of a building near the center of the city and also doubles as a meeting place for the VFW. They had few guns used for parades and for some reason, she kept the gun in a hole in the wall of the room, the rest men. I was told about the weapons, and wasted no time, I drove my car around in a hurry to leave and we moved to the new weapons for the machine and our fortress. The weapons were wrapped in wax paper and grease, and there were about five or six of them. Ihas a house and clean and my friend was working on the rest of the fortress.

A few days later, when I pulled up in his court, the sheriff of the county was parked in the yard. He opened the trunk of his car and asked me if I do something for the weapons they had there, he knew. I explained that I was doing and if they would follow me home I would have given the last. Dad was at home when we arrived, and began to speak, after a while ', when everything was fine again when I asked first in the city, and they said OK.Things were quite for a while ', and I was relieved, I later found out that my friend had ordered ammunition for the rifles. I have avoided, and after that year, he put the dynamite in a sewer manhole and blew on it. It was in the theater, boasts a lot and got into trouble. Then the police would have stopped me after school and ask me to drugs and other things that I think I thought I knew what was happening in the city. I had never heard of drugsand not know there were so many problems in our small town. Dad warned me that I had better save my money for cigarettes when I go to jail. So I cut back my activities in the wild later.

Winter came, and always more fun to drive, we would drive on the icy road and cut the wheel to see how many we shot. I'm amazed that I survived this winter.

Our trip to Churchill Falls and Labrador City in the Trans Labrador Highway

!±8± Our trip to Churchill Falls and Labrador City in the Trans Labrador Highway

Colleen and I were Joe Mackay in the cabin for a few days before heading to Churchill Falls. Mr.and Mrs. Mackay were the hosts. They were also great cooks and prepared some delicious meals of caribou meat, soup, partridge, hare and moose.

Ray drove us to Muskrat Falls. We went on the side of the hill to the top of the waterfall. There were patches of snow on the track and the ground was soft. Ray has provided us with rubber boots for your feet dry. TheRoar of the falls was deafening. It was at a point where the river narrows between Churchill Falls on two hills and rocks. The cases were not as high, but the river was so close, millions of gallons of water flowed through this gorge with great force. "So this is a part of the Lower Churchill," I thought. "What a source of hydroelectric development."

We sat on a rock above the falls and falls off the fog seemed a light rain. It 'was very refreshing. Colleen was onSkirt, long blond hair in the wind. He looked at me and smiled: "What a beautiful woman."

Ray took a few pictures. We drove to the top of the waterfall and walked around some rocks, where the river widens. It looked like a large lake above the waterfall. Ray took us back through a different path along the beach. At this point the river was about a mile off. There were a couple of canoes and some old caribou bones washed on the beach. Colleen got up and saw the horns. Jetwatching the water with binoculars. He pointed to two canoes moving towards them. We stopped and waited for the canoes landed on the beach. It 'been a couple that we met during a previous trip to Labrador.

Ray and I spoke with the two canoes for about 15 minutes, while Colleen watched with amazement. The two canoes containing hunting equipment, camping and fishing equipment. One of the men showed them a fish about four feet long. They chatted a few minutes shaking hands andNext to the truck.

We drove to the cabin, and Joe sat in the road to Churchill, until we arrived at a crossroads. The charred remains of burnt trees showed where a large forest fire had burned through the area. A sign said Iceland Gull. We turned off the main road and continue up along the River. The four-wheel drive crashed into the street. We arrived to a washout period of Ray and was browsing around on the riverbank.

Ray took two fishing rods andtook me behind a pool just below the rapids. Colleen stood by the truck for a few minutes. Then they went to the side of the hill, according to an ancient caribou road, and looked at the stream. You could see for miles. They examined the ground to look through the binoculars, while Ray and I caught some fish. He scored a pair of geese in the valley. He waved the telescope to detect a swamp and saw three caribou feeding on the edge of a pond.

Weback to the truck with three nice fish. Ray rummaged through his backpack and dug some potatoes, onions, Coleman stove, cutlery and began preparing a meal, while I made a shelter to protect us from the wind. A few minutes later, Colleen is back and we enjoyed a meal fit for a king.

Ken Smith came to Joe a couple of minutes after cabin Ray. We were unpacking the truck, when Ken went into the cabin. Joe came in and produced a bottle of rum and a couple of bottles of home-madeWine. Ms. Mackay deleted some caribou hot dogs and grilled salmon. Joe took his guitar and violin. Ray has his accordion and began playing at The Northern Lights of Labrador. Ken and Colleen looked at me and said: "Have fun .. not really let you rip, leaving for Churchill Falls in the early hours of the morning."

There was a mist rising from the river to create pockets of fog in the valleys as we drove to the hotel the road. As we climbed the hill, disappeared into the fog. We lookedthe river crosses the valley and the hills of Goose Bay was and where the river narrows to see if Muskrat form. There was a view from the top of the hill. Ken stopped the truck and we were able to take some photos. We could see where the river ran Lower Brook bigger.

"What a beautiful sight," said Colleen. "So this is a part of the mighty Churchill River. What a beautiful country."

We drove and walked and walked Iceland Gull at a turning point inPope Hill, we started to climb. Ken explained that this was part of the new road, and indicated a path that went straight up the hill. "This is the old part. They call this the Pope's Hill, because people driving by Churchill said the rosary and the prayers before that worked," he laughed.

We were well above sea level, and there was snow on the side of the road and into the woods. Cache River, we sat down and a time step, Mitchum came to the river, fiftyMiles from Churchill Falls.

We arrived at Churchill Falls has seen before noon for a tour of the hydroelectric power plant in two, then went to the hotel for lunch. Why use a hub system for your landscape lighting project

!±8± Why use a hub system for your landscape lighting project

Want to make your home standout from the rest of the neighborhood? Nothing can improve the look of your home such as lighting landscape more. She has the look and layout you want, you have the fittings, transformers and cabling purchased. Chances are, there is a small object that you did your shopping list on the left: stroke.

For most novice do-it-yourself, when you install a lighting system is the preferred method chaining. Chaining is when you accept his leadershipWires from the transformer and connect it with the first unit. And then with the wire holder and the second after the first light, and so on and so forth. The most common problem with this method, voltage drop, as you head down the chain. Each device should receive 11.5 to 12 volts to the device. But when the devices 6, 7 or more are linked together, the further down the line you go, get less power. So the light from more distantTransformer weakens. And for the weekend warrior who has just buried an entire Saturday for cable, this is a nightmare. Now you must keep the cable and disconnect all lines to create a different cable. But there is a way to avoid this.

A hub is a small, central one for your cabling. Take your plant and put them in the design you have created. Exactly in the middle or somewhere in the vicinity of all plants, installation of the hub. The way in which systemsOperation is simple. The power from the transformer is connected to the hub for the devices. Then, the wiring of each unit is connected to the hub. All hubs are connected devices 5-10, depending on the manufacturer. This voltage drop, because the wiring is run from the transformer distributed individually to each device without stress along the line. This system is a must for larger and more complex projects. There are many reasons to implement the system of hubs:

1 Hubsreduce the need for many long runs back to the transformer
2 Reduce the assignment of the cable
3 Give you more efficient, flexible layouts
4 Hubs provide a central location for all your cable splicing, corrections and troubleshooting much easier
5 The connectors are all protected in the hub
6 are small and discreet
7 Very convenient. 10-25 dollars depending on where you buy
8 And above all, reduce the voltage drop

Save yourself theIrritation and headaches, to design a lighting layout with the hub system. You will not regret it.
